18 May Reflection – Living in the Spirit
Pentecost is the feast of the mysterious movement of the Holy Spirit. As we celebrate the birth of the Church at this time we are also invited to be attentive to God’s presence in our lives.
The apostles were transformed from fear and trembling to courageous boldness. We too can be changed by believing in the power of the Spirit within us. It is the same spirit. St Paul tells us “God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us” (Rom 5:5) Such giving is generous and unending.
Mary said her “yes” to the spirit within her. She suffered pain and loss at the death of Jesus her son. She waited in quiet confidence and trust with the apostles. The Spirit came powerfully into their lives and they were never the same again. They were empowered with hope and enthusiasm to bring this new life to others and fulfill the mission of Jesus.
To live in the Spirit is to trust that God’s spirit is with us re-creating and transforming us. We can say “yes” to this wonderful gift, which can animate our lives in a new direction.
Let us pray..
Spirit of God…renew your kindness and compassion within us
Spirit of God..renew your courage and patience within us
Spirit of God recreate us in your image and likeness. Amen
